Roger Ebert Back On The Job
A couple of weeks ago when I wrote about my favorite TV critics I mentioned Roger Ebert in passing when I talked about needing to know a critic’s biases before I trusted them. Well I was thinking about Roger Ebert today because I just heard about his latest throat surgery.
Though he’s ready to return to writing reviews, his surgery was unsuccessful in restoring his speech. As you may know, Ebert lost his speech due to multiple surgeries for thyroid cancer in addition to a tracheostomy. He wrote yesterday in the Chicago Sun Times:
Are you as bored with my health as I am? I underwent a third surgery in January, this one in Houston, and once again there were complications. I am sorry to say that my ability to speak was not restored. That would require another surgery.
He went on to say that he doesn’t plan to have another surgery right now so that must mean he won’t be returning to “Ebert and Roeper” anytime soon, if ever. Saying that he’s happy to be cancer-free, he’s looking forward to his annual film festival and then to reviewing some movies
As someone who grew up watching Roger Ebert and appreciating his passion for the movies, I just wanted to wish him well and say I hope he’ll keep those reviews coming for many years to come.
