Here Come “The Tudors”

the-tudors.JPGLast weekend on the advice of my good friend Kay, I watched all ten episodes of the first season of “The Tudors.” Of course I’d heard about this Showtime show about the young Henry VIII, played with glorious hotness by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but I only got Showtime a few weeks ago and I hadn’t bothered to check it out on On Demand.

Well a couple of weeks ago, Kay and I went to see “The Other Boleyn Girl” starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson and she nearly fell asleep, she was so bored. I didn’t think it was that bad, but Kay said, “This is nothing. You have to watch “The Tudors.”"

So last weekend I watched “The Tudors.” And boy, was Kay right! It’s like a good historical Harlequin romance come to life. It’s a visual bodice ripper with handsome hunks, curvaceous cuties of the court and enough legitimate historical facts to keep it interesting. There are also political machinations, but those don’t hold a candle to the royal romps in the bedroom.

At Henry’s court the royals and their underlings believed in their pleasures and as the King played, so did his courtiers. When he’s not deflowering the latest ladies in waiting, Henry deals with the affairs of state, dancing along the line between reckless young turk and developing monarch.

By the end of the first season, Henry’s in the thwarted throes of passion for the dazzling, yet unattainable Anne Boleyn. When season two begins on March 30th, Henry’s desperation to divorce his current wife, the lovely Katherine of Aragon will be in overdrive and his desire to ditch her will eventually lead to his ejecting Catholicism from the British Isle.

I can’t wait.
