“Lost” Snap Recap: “Ji Yeon” (3/13/08)

capture.JPGThe focus of “Ji Yeon” is Sun. After figuring out the “rescuers” aren’t there to get them off the island, Sun decides she and Jin would be safer with Locke and the others in Lockeville. Juliet sticks her unwanted nose in and insists that Sun can’t go because she and the baby will die if they stay on the island. Sun understandably doesn’t trust Juliet and is determined to get away from the beach and the “rescuers.”

It’s then that Juliet tells Jin about Sun’s potential death sentence and the fact that she slept with another man. Jin storms off to go fishing with Bernard and Sun gives Juliet a well deserved slap in the face.

Eventually with some wise words from Bernard, Jin forgives Sun and they reconcile in a lovely and touching scene.

Our flashes forward are of Sun about to give birth in Korea. She’s recognized as one of the Oceanic Six when she’s wheeled into the hospital, and during her difficult labor she calls for Jin repeatedly, but he has yet to arrive. He’s busy trying to buy a stuffed panda bear and get to the hospital in time.

Finally she gives birth to a girl and tragically we discover that the scenes of Jin aren’t flashes forward, but flashes back. Jin was buying the panda for the new grandchild of a business associate of his boss, Sun’s father. This was during the time when Jin was his boss’s main flunky.

Why was Jin’s flashback tragic? Because in the future, Jin is dead. We discover this in the final scene when Sun and a visiting Hurley go to a Korean cemetery and introduce Jin’s daughter, Ji Yeon to him at his grave.

Sniff, sniff. It was very, very sad.
