“Lost” Snap Recap: “The Beginning Of The End”
Last week was the premiere of “Lost” and every Monday I’m going to have a “Lost” Snap Recap. Here’s the first.
This was a Hurley-centric episode. Yay, for Hurley. We didn’t see enough of him last season. Anyway, the show starts off with a classic “Breaking News” police car chase through LA. Jack is getting dressed when he sees on his television the vintage red sports car the cops are chasing. Jack recognizes the car and we find out before the opening credits that the driver is Hurley. This is a flash forward.
Flashing back to the island, Jack and the Losties are still near the radio tower waiting for rescuers to arrive. At the beach, Hurley, Sayid, Sawyer, Juliet, Jin and Bernard are told by Desmond of Charlie’s fate and that the people on the boat may not be rescuers.
We continue flashing forward to Hurley as he sees disturbing visions, not the least of which is a dead Charlie who tells Hurley he has to go back to the island. That’s why Hurley freaked and was being chased by the cops in the first place. He saw Charlie in a convenience store, screeched out of there and the cops gave chase.
Hurley goes back to the mental institution after freaking out in the police station and gets a visit from a creepy guy named Matthew who claims to be from Oceanic. Matthew does a song and dance about Oceanic’s concern for Hurley until Hurley figures out the guy’s a fake. When Matthew asks Hurley if “they” are still alive, a scared Hurley calls for help, but Matthew’s gone by then.
Back at the island everyone eventually meets up in a jungle clearing for a showdown over whether or not to go meet the “rescuers” with loving arms, or run like heck and hide in the deserted barracks of the Others. Ben keeps saying they’ll all die if they don’t hide. Jack doesn’t believe him. Hurley however, helps convince a bunch of people to go with Locke to the deserted barracks because of Charlie’s last message. Jack and Kate stay together and wait for rescue.
Flashing forward, Jack visits Hurley in the mental institution and wants to know if he’ll “tell.” Hurley doesn’t answer, but does say he’s sorry he went with Locke on the island. And he thinks maybe they need to go back. Jack’s like, no way. Hurley’s like, “never say never, Dude.”
The final scene is Kate and Jack coming face to face with a man who parachutes into the jungle to “save” them. Next week promises even more mayhem.
