Suicide Food October 2, 2008

About a year ago, I came across this blog called Suicide Food. What on earth is suicide food, I asked. Well, look at the picture of the pig on the bbq. Suicide food is the portrayal of an animal expressing the desire to be eaten. The blog describes it as:

Suicide Food is any depiction of animals that act as though they wish to be consumed. Suicide Food actively participates in or celebrates its own demise. Suicide Food identifies with the oppressor. Suicide Food is a bellwether of our decadent society. Suicide Food says, “Hey! Come on! Eating meat is without any ethical ramifications! See, Mr. Greenjeans? The animals aren’t complaining! So what’s your problem?” Suicide Food is not funny

The fact that companies selling meat portray these animals, who all have the desire to live, as giving their bodies happily to humans to eat, is frankly disgusting. And if you go to the website, you’ll see that suicide food is a common way to advertise. They try to make death lighthearted and show that animals are meant to be eaten. Afterall they’re asking for it.

The site rates how disgusting the ads are by nooses. 1 noose isn’t so bad. 5 nooses is really bad. The pig in the picture above is rated as 4 nooses. So go check them out. It’s a great critical look at how farm animals are portrayed in mainstream culture.

And 95% of it is fine - sleeping puppies, playful kittens and the like. They sometimes even post animal welfare related articles - nothing about vegetarianism but stuff about shelters, like this post. And I’m glad they do, especially since they are one of the most popular animal blogs on the web. But every once in a while they post something similar to the post I did the other day: Suicide Food.
