Workout DVD Rentals…

But uh-oh, those wiiiiinter blaaaaaaahs!

… yeah, I was in a high school production of Grease back in the mid-90’s. Sorry about this horrible flashback/reference. I just had to get it out.

But really - everywhere I look now, people are writing about, and talking about, combating these so-called “winter blahs” and S.A.D. I’ll tell ya something - I live in Phoenix, AZ. There is barely such a thing as “winter” around here, and there is nothing “blah” about it. Here we are in mid-October, and it’s expected to be in the high 90’s tomorrow. Seriously - WTF, Mother Nature?! Cut me a break here!

Winter in Phoenix is someone else’s perfect “summer” in my opinion. All summer long, we can’t really go outside for a run, or even walk to our mailbox, lest we are into heat strokes. If I want to go outside for some exercise, I have to do it between 4 and 6 AM. While everyone else around the country is enjoying summer activities outside, I am going out of my way to stay indoors as much as possible. Come “winter” here - which means it can dip into the 30’s at night, and get up to the 60-70s in the daytime - I am all over the outdoor activities. Running at the track, going for walks after dinner or a mid-day walk while at work, biking to work instead of driving, going hiking. It’s perfect!

Still, I did live in New York City through one horrible winter, and while initially I was mesmerized by my first NYC snowfall, the novelty quickly wore off. I can totally understand the nightmare you cold-state people must go through every year. It is no wonder that your desire to exercise and stay active is all but dead around this time of the year. Granted, shoveling snow is GREAT exercise, but really…

For those of you who end up staying indoors as much as possible during the upcoming cold winter months, there is something you can do to stay active, if you don’t have exercise equipment at home. NETFLIX!

You can get a steady stream of fun, new workout DVDs arriving at your door weekly! They offer enough of a variety that if you get three a week, you can have cardio, strength and flexibility or throw in some less traditional workouts, and get through the winter doing all sorts of new and exciting routines. I found some possibly great titles under various search terms (I even included some postnatal titles for the new mom’s reading this blog!):

Cardio and Dance:

Strength:

Flexibility / Yoga:

And if you type in “Workout or “Fitness” you’ll get a slew of additional titles from belly dancing to cardio strip tease, from step to samba. There is easily a different workout DVD for every winter day until the first day of spring in here! If you already rent workout DVDs, I’d love to hear what some of your favorites have been, and if you don’t currently rent, but start to after reading this post, check in and let me know what you get!
