Naked in the Boardroom

I loved the title of this book “Naked in the Boardroom: A CEO Bares Her Secrets So You Can Transform Your Career” and decided Robin Wolaner is a Diva Mogul with a sense of humor worth reading.

Wolaner doesn’t literally get naked in the boardroom, but she most certainly does bare it all in a figurative sense. From her early career at Penthouse to her climb as founder of Parenting and later executive at Time Warner, Wolaner gives us the inside scoop of what it is like being one of the first high ranking females in the largely male-dominated magazine publishing industry.

While her writing is dry and uninspiring at moments, it’s no surprise that quite a few of Wolaner’s corporate experiences tend to reflect this tone. However, her book is unique in that very few top women executives offer such an accurate and down-to-earth account of life at the top without the sugar coating.

There are many lessons to be learned from Wolaner’s experiences climbing to the top. Luckily, she breaks down her success into 80 Naked Truths easily transferable to our own businesses and careers. Here is one tip:

“Naked Truth #74: If an idea is a good one, more than one person will have it. Don’t freak out! Consider it a marketplace validation of your concept. Win through superior execution. It’s not about being first, it’s about lasting.”

Read this book, even if you only skim through and around her 80 Naked Truths. She offers some great advice. While her lessons were learned fully clothed in the boardroom, thanks to Wolaner, we can now learn from her while baring it all in the privacy of our own homes.
